button SPECIAL SESSIONS 10/11: BOALSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, NOVEMBER 14–16

To break the tedium of Alexandria traffic and the same great bars and restaurants, the seminar will retreat to the Boalsburg, Pennsyvlania, seminar room on Academy Street (appropriately) for a two-session discussion of Bloom's system of revisionary ratios. This system includes six terms related to the idea of passage, retreat, alienation, and separation: askesis/demon; tesseræ, clinamen; kenosis, aprophrades. In combination with Henry Johnstone's categories of travel, Bloom's system terms out to be a means of showing how the landscape and the architecture in the landscape responds directly to the logic of metalepsis in seekind and defending shelter. Members bring case studies (fortified towns of the Renaissance, Medieval monasteries, stories of the desert fathers, etc.). A rustic sunroom will serve simultaneously as a seminar room, cinema, dining hall, and dance floor.
