Constructing diagrams within the foundations, woodwork, and flooring of houses was a practice of African slaves adept at "hoodoo," a magical science using plants and other materials to influence behavior and luck. Excavation of the William Brice House in Anapolis, Maryland has recovered the first intact cosmogram used in the colonial U.S.

Although "hoodoo" is regarded as a derogatory term applied by whites, it has been taken into the popular culture vocabulary of musicians, historians, and even practitioners of hoodoo.
